Lotions are generally lighter, creams richer, and ointments the thickest and greasiest of the three. Choosing among them starts with the area you want to moisturize, how dry it feels and when you will use the product. A format comparison can narrow a shortlist; the current product directions still decide its intended use.
What changes between the three formats?
The American Academy of Dermatology’s moisturizer guide explains that creams have more oil and a thicker texture than lotions, while ointments are thicker again. Think of this as a starting map:
- Lotion: a relatively thin, easy-to-spread format when you prefer a lighter application.
- Cream: a richer option to consider when a lotion leaves dry skin needing more moisture.
- Ointment: a very rich option often considered for very dry areas, with a greasy feel that may suit an evening better.
Keep the product name and ingredient information alongside its format. Two products called “cream” are still two separate formulas. Thickness is not a test result or a reason to assume matching ingredients.
Choose for one part of your day
Make the question specific: “What can I use on my hands after washing at work?” is easier to answer than “Which moisturizer is best?” Here are two example decisions, rather than a universal routine:
Daytime hand care: compare products whose directions cover hand use, then consider whether the finish is practical before returning to a keyboard or handling objects. Evening body care: if a light lotion is not meeting the needs of dry skin, a cream or ointment may be worth discussing with a pharmacist or dermatologist. In either example, decide whether you are replacing an existing moisturizer or filling a missing step. Keeping three textures on the shelf does not create three separate needs. A lotion that works comfortably for one area also does not settle what another area needs.
Check use as well as texture

If dryness persists despite care, seek a dermatologist’s advice. Burning, stinging or irritation from a moisturizer also deserves professional attention; repeatedly switching to thicker products may leave the real question unresolved.
When using emollients, keep clothing and bedding that have contacted them away from flames and cigarettes. The NHS warns that residue on these fabrics can make them catch fire more easily, including with paraffin-free products.
Three questions about moisturizer formats
Is cream always better than lotion?
No. A richer texture can be useful for dry skin, but choosing a moisturizer also involves the intended body area and how comfortably you can use it. The format name alone does not decide which exact product suits you.
Do I need lotion, cream and ointment in the same routine?
No. Treat them as options for a moisturizing step. The NHS gives cream by day and ointment at night as one possible arrangement; it does not mean everyone needs to buy or layer all three.
Can I use a body cream on my face?
Check the directions and permitted areas for that exact product. A body-care description does not establish facial suitability. If the information is unclear, ask the manufacturer before extending its use to another area.
